I FELL FOR YOU, 2026

I FELL FOR YOU begins with three visions.

In each of them, the world is in a state of collapse.

A child falls toward the ocean beneath a burning ship.

A mother places her baby into the arms of someone who may be able to carry it out of war.

A crowd moves toward an enormous gate while one figure senses that the prescribed direction may be wrong.

At the center of each vision appears the same possible self.

He flies.

He sees.

He decides.

He acts.

Yet the finished work does not illustrate these scenes directly.

It absorbs them.

Red, blue and black lines preserve their energy as hidden structures within the painting: event, relationship, system. The original narratives dissolve into BECKER’s dense visual universe of bodies, beings, eyes, architecture, movement and microscopic encounters.

What remains is not a superhero narrative, but a question of agency.

What kind of self appears when there is no time left between knowing what feels right and acting upon it?

The work is constructed from four rigid cardboard panels covered with reused cotton fabric and mounted on a frame. The folds of the fabric created the first visual structure: a central figure opening outward, immediately suggesting a body, a cross, a curtain and a sacred apparition.

Gold follows this form.

It cuts through the white surface as light, presence and action.

From a distance, the composition approaches the language of an icon. A monumental golden body seems to open the image from within.

Up close, that certainty collapses.

The figure fragments into emergencies.

Small beings emerge. Faces appear and disappear. Bodies fall, rise, observe and transform. Eyes populate the surface until looking itself becomes unstable.

From afar, an icon. Up close, an emergency.

The golden figure does not stand outside these worlds.

It is composed of them.

The savior is not above the chaos. He is made from it.

Flesh-toned areas interrupt the apparent purity of white and gold. They return light to the body — to vulnerability, sexuality, birth and incarnation. Elsewhere, another face seems to look upward toward the golden presence, as though one version of the self were observing another.

White, too, refuses to remain neutral.

Parts of the work contain phosphorescent pigment. They absorb light during the day and shift toward an azure glow in darkness, while the glossy surface and metallic gold continue to change with the surrounding light.

What appears empty is therefore holding another state.

What appears finished can still transform.

This places I FELL FOR YOU firmly within WHO IS PAINTING WHOM?, while extending its central question beyond memory and reincarnation.

Perhaps the artist is not only being shaped by former selves.

Perhaps he is also being shaped by possible ones.

The title holds this ambiguity.

"I fell for you" can mean falling in love.

It can describe the physical act of falling toward another.

And it can describe surrendering to the recognition of a self one has sensed for years without fully allowing it to exist.

The work therefore does not ask whether this figure is objectively real.

It asks what happens when a possible self becomes powerful enough to influence the person imagining him.

"Did I dream him — or did he teach me how to recognize myself?"
